This victory earned him the prestigious rainbow jersey, the universal symbol of the world title. He had already won this World Pursuit Championship in 1964, thereby cementing his place amongst the finest track cyclists of his era.
Bracke also possessed remarkable qualities on the road. In particular, he set the hour record in 1967 and won the Vuelta a España in 1971, demonstrating exceptional versatility between velodromes and major road races.
